Methodology & Assumptions

Our numbers are simplified models for comparison — not personalised tax filings.

Overview

For each destination we estimate: gross income → income tax → optional social contributions → annual living costs → net remaining. Rankings on the home page sort countries by highest net remaining at your entered income.

Income tax

  • Zero-tax destinations (e.g. UAE): personal income tax modelled as 0%.
  • Flat-tax countries: a single rate applied to taxable income per published brackets.
  • Progressive countries: marginal brackets applied sequentially to annual income.

We do not model deductions, credits, double-tax treaties, local municipal taxes, wealth taxes, or special expat regimes (e.g. Beckham Law, NHR) unless noted in country FAQs.

Freelancer / social contributions

In Freelancer mode we add an approximate 14% social or self-employment layer on top of income tax in countries with personal income tax. This is a planning shortcut — real rates vary by structure, salary vs dividends, and social security treaties.

Living costs

Monthly living costs are editorial estimates in USD (rent, groceries, utilities, leisure) based on nomad-oriented research. Couple mode multiplies annual living costs by 1.5×. City pills on country pages show illustrative city-level rent differences; the main calculator uses the national average unless you select a city for display only.

Tax residency & visas

The calculator does not determine whether you become tax resident, whether your visa allows remote work, or where your employer is taxed. Those outcomes depend on days spent in-country, ties, payroll location, and treaty law.

Data sources

Tax brackets and visa summaries are cross-checked against official portals listed on each country page. We review guides periodically and show a content updated date when data changes.

Baseline comparison

“Tax savings” and ROI panels compare your result against a 35% hypothetical high-tax baseline — a visual shorthand, not a claim about your current country of taxation.
